IPL, DPL, BBL: What’s the Difference?

If it looks like a horse, rides like a horse , neighs like a horse and eats like a horse, it is probably a type of horse.
The beauty industry loves big acronyms, technical words and even bigger claims.
IPL is described as old. DPL is called the next generation. BBL is often presented as though it is a completely different form of energy.
The truth is much simpler.
IPL, DPL and BBL are closely related pulsed-light technologies. They use non-coherent light to target melanin, haemoglobin and other structures in the skin.
They broadly treat the same things:
Pigmentation and sun damage
Redness and small vascular concerns
Acne
Hair reduction
Skin rejuvenation
Skin tone and clarity
Each does it slightly differently, but they are not completely different animals.
The Simple Explanation

All three are light-based systems. None is technically a laser.
The main differences are how the light is filtered, shaped, cooled and delivered.
Modern IPL Is Not Old or Slow
Some suppliers compare their new technology with IPL machines from 15 years ago and then declare IPL outdated.
That is not a fair comparison.
Modern advanced IPL can operate at up to 10 or 12 Hz, provide in-motion treatments and deliver precisely controlled single or multiple pulses.
BBL can also operate extremely quickly, with some current systems offering up to 20 Hz. But the number on the screen does not determine the true treatment speed.
Actual speed also depends on:
Spot size
Fluence
Pulse duration
Capacitor recharge time
Cooling performance
The number of required passes
The claim that IPL is slow while DPL or BBL is fast simply does not hold up anymore.
What Advanced IPL Actually Does
IPL starts with a broad-spectrum xenon flashlamp. Interchangeable filters then remove parts of that spectrum to suit different treatments.
Advanced IPL systems may offer filters ranging from approximately 420 to 755 nm.
These numbers are normally cut-off points, not individual wavelengths.
A 640 nm filter does not produce only 640 nm. It blocks most light below 640 nm while allowing a much broader range above it to pass.
By changing the filter, pulse width, energy and cooling, the same IPL handpiece can be configured for pigmentation, redness, acne, hair reduction or skin rejuvenation.
This flexibility is why good IPL remains one of the most useful technologies a clinic can own.
What Makes DPL Different?
DPL is essentially a more refined form of pulsed light.
Instead of using interchangeable cut-off filters, a genuine DPL handpiece produces a fixed and more concentrated treatment band. Its spectral filtering is built into the handpiece.
Common skin-focused DPL bands include 500 to 600 nm or 550 to 650 nm for pigment and vascular treatments. Hair-focused DPL systems generally use a longer treatment band designed around melanin in the hair follicle.
DPL still uses optical filtering internally. The important difference is that the treatment band is fixed and purpose-built rather than created using interchangeable filters.
If Your DPL Takes IPL Filters, It Is IPL
This is the easy way to spot fake DPL.
If your “DPL” handpiece takes the same interchangeable cut-off filters as an IPL handpiece, it is not a dedicated DPL handpiece.
It is IPL.
Someone has put “DPL” on the handpiece, touchscreen or brochure to make it sound newer.
A genuine DPL system may have several dedicated handpieces for different applications. However, each handpiece should have its treatment spectrum built in. You should not be inserting ordinary IPL filters into it.
DPL concentrates more of its usable energy into the desired treatment range. This can make it more refined and efficient for a particular job.
It does not automatically make every DPL machine better than every IPL machine. A poor lamp, unstable capacitors, weak cooling or inaccurate settings will still produce a poor result.
Where Does BBL Fit?
BBL stands for BroadBand Light. It is Sciton’s proprietary pulsed-light platform.
Genuine Sciton BBL is a well-engineered system with excellent cooling, filters, pulse control, large spot sizes and fast treatment modes.
It treats pigmentation, redness, acne, unwanted hair and general skin ageing. In other words, broadly the same treatment categories as a good modern IPL or DPL platform.
BBL does not use a completely different form of energy. It is a highly developed and branded version of broad-spectrum pulsed light.
Sciton’s standard BBL filters operate similarly to IPL cut-off filters. Its newer 532+ filter creates a narrower 500 to 650 nm band, which is actually very similar in concept to DPL.

BBL deserves credit for its engineering. But it should still be kept in technical perspective.
Most “BBL” Handpieces Are Not BBL
There are now a huge number of manufacturers offering so-called “BBL” handpieces on completely unrelated devices.
They are not genuine Sciton BBL systems. They have no connection to Sciton.
In our experience, they are almost always ordinary IPL handpieces with “BBL” added to the casing, touchscreen or sales brochure.
Sometimes the only technological advancement is the sticker.
If a supplier claims a machine has BBL, ask:
Is the device manufactured by Sciton?
Is it shown in official Sciton documentation?
What is the measured spectral output?
What filters, lamps and pulse-control system does it use?
How is the output tested and calibrated?
If the machine is not manufactured by Sciton, it is not genuine BBL. It is another manufacturer’s pulsed-light system, regardless of what has been printed on the handpiece.
That does not automatically mean the machine is bad. However, many imitation “BBL” handles are simply low-quality IPL handpieces being dressed up to justify a higher price.
Genuine BBL is a specific Sciton platform. Fake BBL is relabelled IPL.
They All Have Similar Fitzpatrick Limitations
IPL, DPL and BBL all use light that can be absorbed by melanin.
In darker skin, epidermal melanin competes with the intended treatment target. This increases the risk of burns, post-inflammatory pigmentation and loss of pigment.
Changing the name from IPL to DPL or BBL does not make that melanin disappear.
Some systems and selected protocols can treat Fitzpatrick V clients. However, none should be considered automatically suitable for every treatment on Fitzpatrick V or VI.
For hair reduction on highly melanated skin, a properly designed 1064 nm laser is generally a more appropriate option.
Why Zenith Uses Both IPL and DPL
The Zenith NOVA uses two purpose-built handpieces because advanced IPL and DPL each have strengths.
The advanced IPL handpiece uses nine filters covering 420 to 755 nm for pigmentation, vascular, acne and skin-rejuvenation treatments.
The dedicated DPL handpiece uses a fixed treatment profile optimised specifically for hair reduction. It does not rely on interchangeable IPL filters.
IPL provides flexibility. DPL provides a more focused treatment profile.
They complement each other because they are closely related, not because they are completely different technologies.
VPL, AFT, OPT and SHR: Useful Features, Not Magic
These names can describe genuine and useful improvements. But they do not represent four completely new forms of energy.
They are mostly different ways of filtering, shaping or delivering IPL-style light.
VPL: Variable Pulsed Light
VPL is Energist’s branded form of IPL.
It allows a pulse to be divided into adjustable micro-pulses, giving the operator more control over how quickly the energy is delivered.
That can improve treatment flexibility and comfort. But the device is still producing filtered, broad-spectrum pulsed light.
VPL is variable IPL. It is not a laser and it is not magic.
AFT: Advanced Fluorescence Technology
AFT is Alma’s branded development of IPL.
It uses fluorescent optical technology to convert some unwanted shorter-wavelength light into a more useful treatment spectrum. The objective is to use the flashlamp’s energy more efficiently and deliver a more controlled pulse.
That is clever optical engineering. But even Alma describes AFT as an advanced form of IPL.
AFT is refined IPL. It is not a completely different energy source.
OPT: Optimal Pulse Technology
OPT is Lumenis’ name for controlling the shape and consistency of an IPL pulse.
Instead of allowing the pulse energy to spike and fall unpredictably, OPT is designed to provide more even power throughout the pulse.
This can improve consistency, comfort and control.
But the light still comes from an IPL handpiece using interchangeable filters. Lumenis describes OPT as part of its IPL platform.
OPT is better pulse control for IPL. It is not magic.
SHR: Super Hair Removal
SHR is a treatment method, not a type of light.
It uses repeated, lower-energy pulses while the operator moves the handpiece across the skin. The goal is to build heat gradually in the follicle rather than hitting it with one aggressive pulse.
SHR can be delivered by IPL or diode laser systems. Even Alma confirms that its SHR method can be used with different applicators, including IPL. Alma explains the SHR delivery method here.
When someone says they have an “SHR machine”, that does not tell you what technology is inside it.
SHR describes how the energy is delivered. It does not tell you whether the device uses IPL, diode laser or something else.
The Bottom Line
IPL, DPL and BBL use closely related pulsed-light technology to perform broadly the same types of treatments.
IPL provides flexibility through interchangeable filters. DPL concentrates the light into a more specific fixed band. Genuine BBL combines broad-spectrum light with Sciton’s engineering, cooling, software and pulse control.
VPL, AFT and OPT are branded ways of improving how that light is filtered or delivered. SHR is a method of applying repeated energy while moving the handpiece.
Some of these are genuine engineering improvements. None is magic.
Different filters. Different pulse shapes. Different cooling systems. Different names.
But if it produces broad-spectrum light like IPL, uses filters like IPL and treats the same things as IPL, it is almost certainly another form of IPL.
